The Association for the
Promotion of the Unity of Christendom

APUC clergy2023 Annual Mass

The Association for the Promotion of the Unity of Christendom was founded in 1857 to foster reconciliation between the Anglican, Roman Catholic, and Orthodox Churches.  Its successor organization, the Order of Corporate Reunion, was established in 1874 as a voluntary association of the Church of England to promote the restoration of the Church of England to apostolic unity with the universal Church, in particular by removing objections to Anglican Orders by performing conditional ordinations for Anglican clergy. The Roman Catholic authority for endorsing its founding was reportedly the Patriarch of Venice, Joseph Aloysius Cardinal Trevisanato. The consecrations of the three original Order of Corporate Reunion Bishops were authorized in May 1877 by Blessed Pope Pius IX.

In 2023, the Order decided to reprise the name of its predecessor organization, The Association for the Promotion of the Unity of Christendom.  Further details can be found in the Notice.

In this day and age, in the wake of the crisis facing the modern Anglican and Roman Catholic churches, the Association for the Promotion of the Unity of Christendom directs its efforts not merely to the reconciliation of opposing elements within the broadly Catholic religious traditions but also to the process of authentic reformation or restoration within these religious traditions.  In particular, the Association advocates for a return to the historic doctrine of the sacraments as represented in the 1537 "Bishops' Book" and in the 1604 Canons of the Church of England.
